Random Scribbles

This week I've been cleaning up my workplace. Earlier this year I moved in to a studio I share with some other guys. I have got my workplace all set up but it is covered in stacks of drawings and sketches, that I still had to find the right place for.

The other day I was watching a documentary about some Dutch architect who kept stacks of sketchs neatly organized in folders. I decided to do the same. More than 700 filed sketches later (!) I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel. The only stack that stil remains is made up of sketches on folded up paper. I usually work on regular A4 print paper. But every now and then I'll fold the paper in half. These sketches are too small to fit in to the folders, but, because they're small, for now they can lay on the corner of my drawingboard.

I figured you might like to take a look at these so I've scanned these on for your viewing pleasure. As you can see some are real messy while others are actully quite organized. It's funny to look at back at these things, They were not made to be seen by others but there's a spontaneity to 'em I sort of like. 

Lara vs. Oni

A digital doodle of the final boss fight in the latest Tomb Raider game. If you haven't played it, you should pick it up. I didn't like the trailers but picked it up second hand, and it is really good. As in really, really good. Probably one of the best games I ever played.

Smoking Chef - Doodle

A quick digital sketch done from memory. Outside the building of my studio we have an old bus where you can get something to eat. This sketch was inspired by one of the guys working there. The atmosphere is real laid back and the food is nice, and reasonably priced.

In any other place I probably wouldn't have been too pleased with people smoking in the kitchen but here it just made me smile.

One More Tony

Just when I accepted that Tony Soprano is impossible to draw I doodled this. One of those happy little accidents I guess...

The other day I doodled a cowboy. Threw in some color today and pasted him on this pic of Texas to round it up.

Only after I colored him did I recognize that red bandana /blue shirt combination: Dr. Alan Grant!

The Lobster

A quick doodle of Lobster Johnson. Ink on paper, digital colors with Photoshop.

Some sketches of sheep. The image above is a really small doodle with brown bistre ink (brush and dip pen). The image below is done with pencil and the last image was done with a Tombo.

I'd never really drawn sheep before, it always is a lot fun to draw something new. You think you know what a sheep looks like but when I started to look at pictures and did some initial sketching I discovered that, as always, you never really see something until you draw it.

These are sketches for a bigger illustration that I will show you here soon.   

Gangster Doodles

Some tough guys that visited my faithful note paper today. By the way, I do not work on cardboard and old brown-paper bags all the time, I just hate the way black lines look on a white background when watched on a screen. So I always add some old paper texture for your viewing pleasure.

Accidental Dracula

When I'm working I always have this blank sheet of paper ready to write down stuff I should look up, and things I shouldn't forget. But of course the paper gets doodled upon as well. Today I accidently did this Dracula, I actually think it doesn't look all bad so I thought I'd share it with you.

Dracula is one of my favourite things to draw, I rather like vampires as long as they are cool-dude-vampires like Dracula. (you know: aristoctratic, creepy acent, evening dress) I don't really care for the cry-baby-buffed-up-shirtless-teenpic-vampire that seems to be so popular these days though... 

The Driver

A couple of weeks ago I went to see the movie Drive. I had read quite a lot about it on a number of blogs.   Unfortunately it took a while before Dutch cinemas picked it up, but I guess we are lucky that they showed it at all.

Anyway, even though I had high expectations, Drive did not disappoint me. This is especially surprising since the plot of the film is in no way spectacular, it's the atmosphere of this film that makes it awesome. Ryan Gosling is also great as the silent Driver who makes a living as stuntman and getaway driver for thieves and robbers.

Ever since I saw Drive I have been doodling the Driver. My first attempt were pretty far off, but I believe I'm getting closer. This is a compilation of different driver doodles I did the last few weeks. I wouldn't be surprised if there will be more of this...

Doodle Thug

Whenever I'm working I usually have a stack of blank paper lying next to me. At the end of the day most of the paper will be filled with doodles of random tough guys and gangsters. I don't much worry about it, that's just what I put on paper when I'm not thinking about what I'm doing too much.

This drawing is a typical example of one of my doodles, although I have to say that I usually won't leave so much empty space on my doodle sheets. I've got some marker brushes in photoshop that I really like so I gave this some quick color using those brushes, as way of exercise.
